Walk A Campus in My Shoes: A Refugee Journey

For the week of May 14 - 18, UChicago PARR has brought the "Walk a Campus in My Shoes: A Refugee Journey" poster series to the center of campus. This series is part of a public awareness campaign that seeks to educate students - and community members - about the refugee crisis. These posters provide basic information about refugees as well as the vetting and assimilation processes.

Fact: Refugee Camp: Refugees flee their country of origin to a relatively safe neighboring country or refugee camp.

One in three refugees live in a refugee camp.

Fact: Interview: Refugees entering the U.S. are interviewed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Up until 2017, the U.S. welcomed 50,000-70,000 refugees every year.

Fact: Arrival: Each arriving refugee is assigned to an agency to provide basic services during his or her first 90 days in the U.S.

Refugees come to the U.S. on a travel loan that they must repay.
